KiteSpot: Chasing the Perfect Wind and Place with a New Mobile App
“The team was open, listened to our demands, and was able to implement our requests.'' - Cristian Clipici, CEO & Founder
About the app
KiteSpot is the greatest companion for water sports enthusiasts seeking the perfect location for kiteboarding, windsurfing, wing foiling, schools and shops.
In a world where finding the ideal spot can make or break a session, KiteSpot ensures that riders, from beginners to experts, have access to over 7000 spots worldwide.
As kitesurfing is set for lift-off at the 2024 Summer Olympics, it can easily become a "must-have" app, simplifying the search for the ideal conditions and facilities, ultimately enhancing the overall experience.
Challenges
Creating the KiteSpot app presented several challenges that required creative solutions as well as a collaborative approach between the KiteSpot team and us.
As a startup launching their first product with us, they sought a partner to help define and prioritize MVP functionalities.
Our role extended beyond development as we delved into understanding the nuances of the kitesurfing sport and its practitioners, enabling us to provide more valuable advice.
The motivation for this project was the realization that kitesurfing is a sport practiced in remote, wind-abundant locations.
Kitesurfing is an exotic sport that can be practiced on remote beaches where the wind blows constantly and with high speed. Therefore kitesurfers needed a mobile solution that allows them to find the spots they are looking for.
During development, pivotal moments included the challenge of prioritizing features that would bring the greatest benefit to users and deciding between cross-platform and native technology.
Finding a balance between the vast amount of functionalities in the backlog and the timeline to launch the first version was like chasing the perfect wind. This was finally achieved by doing thorough research, conducting user interviews and relying on a great collaboration between teams.
Market feedback continually shaped the product, requiring us to embrace a fully agile approach.
Content acquisition posed another obstacle because the app required thousands of kitesurfing spots, businesses, and schools. The KiteSpot team handled this very smoothly, which sped up our development process from this point of view.
From a technical perspective, the most demanding task was achieving a balance between displaying numerous map pins, zoom levels, and server load on the backend.
The goal was to ensure users received essential information without compromising performance.
Solutions
The results spoke volumes. In the initial two weeks after launch, KiteSpot garnered hundreds of downloads, marking a promising start to its journey. In 3 weeks, the app gathered approximately 400 new users with an increase of 57% in the following week.
To build this project, we used Figma, Flutter, Retool and Node.js.
The app's reach extended far and wide, with users hailing from various corners of the globe such as the US, Switzerland and the Netherlands.
Notably, Germany, where the KiteSpot team is based, saw significant user adoption, emphasizing the app's local and international appeal.
One of the standout aspects of this project that we’d like to mention is the exceptional communication between the KiteSpot team and us throughout the entire development process.
Clear and transparent communication played an essential role in the project's success, fostering collaboration and ensuring the process was a smooth and productive experience.
